Kilauea has been erupting continuously since 1983, making it the world's most active volcano. Your day starts with pickup from your hotel or airport on the Big Island, then we'll cruise through the renowned Kona Coffee belt that winds along Hualalai and Mauna Loa's slopes. The aroma alone is worth the drive.
At Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you'll explore Kilauea Crater and walk through the otherworldly Thurston Lava Tube—a natural tunnel carved by flowing lava. Steam vents hiss and release volcanic gases right before your eyes. We'll hit the essential spots: Kilauea Iki lookout for those jaw-dropping crater views, Halema'uma'u Crater overlook where Pele herself is said to dwell, and walks across hardened lava fields that tell thirty years of eruption stories.
The adventure continues with visits to Punalu'u Black Sand Beach and Manuka State Park, offering completely different volcanic landscapes. Your guide shares the fascinating science behind island formation while pointing out different lava types and stages of regrowth—from 1800s flows to recent activity. You'll trek through untouched native rainforest and hear ancient Hawaiian legends about Madame Pele, the volcano goddess. Over 500 acres of new land have emerged since the current eruption cycle began.
The helicopter portion provides aerial views of the volcanic landscapes and formations created over the past 30 years of eruption activity.
This 34AP - Private Hawaii Volcano & Helicopter experience runs daily 8am-5pm (approx), welcoming ages 3 and older. Starting from $799 per person, it includes transportation, expert guide services, and park access. Difficulty level: Easy. Health warning: volcanic fumes (VOG) can affect those with respiratory conditions, and expect some walking over rough terrain.
