Magic Island Park

Honolulu

About This Place

Magic Island Park sits on a man-made peninsula jutting into Honolulu Harbor, creating one of Oahu's most protected swimming spots. The calm lagoon stays shallow and gentle, making it ideal for families with young children who want ocean access without the intimidating waves found at most Hawaiian beaches. The park draws locals for weekend barbecues and visitors seeking a relaxed beach day. Kids love the sandy-bottomed lagoon, while adults appreciate the unobstructed sunset views and easy water entry. The grassy areas provide ample space for picnics, and the paved walking path attracts joggers and casual strollers. The shallow lagoon gets quite warm during midday, so morning visits before 10am or late afternoon after 3pm offer the most comfortable swimming. Weekdays see lighter crowds than weekends. The sun reflects intensely off both water and sand, making shade and sun protection essential. The paved paths become scorching during peak sun hours from 11am to 3pm, so wear closed-toe shoes during these times. Free parking fills up quickly in the main lot by 9am on weekends, but additional spaces exist along Ala Moana Boulevard. The park opens at sunrise and closes at sunset with no entry fee. Restrooms and outdoor showers operate near the parking area. While the lagoon remains protected from strong currents, the ocean side of the peninsula can have powerful waves and currents, so stick to the lagoon for safe swimming. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, plenty of water, and beach gear for the best experience.
