About This Place

The Honolulu Zoo spans 42 acres in Waikiki, one of the few major zoos you can walk to from beach hotels. This compact facility houses over 900 animals, including Hawaiian monk seals, Galápagos tortoises, and a notable African savanna section with elephants, lions, and giraffes. Palm trees and ocean breezes create a distinctly tropical zoo experience different from mainland facilities. Families with young children find the zoo most rewarding, though the primate section and reptile house appeal to all ages. The keiki zoo area lets small children interact with farm animals and ride ponies on weekends. Plan two to three hours for a complete visit. Arrive when gates open at 9 AM to avoid afternoon heat and crowds. Animals stay more active during cooler morning hours before 11 AM. The zoo provides minimal shade along pathways, so bring sun protection, water, and comfortable walking shoes. Paved paths accommodate strollers and wheelchairs well, though some gentle hills exist near the African savanna. Parking fills quickly on weekends and holidays. The main lot charges hourly fees, or find street parking along Kapahulu Avenue. Public buses stop directly outside the entrance on Kapahulu Avenue. General admission costs $19 for adults, $11 for children ages 3-12, with Hawaii resident discounts available. The zoo operates daily 9 AM to 4:30 PM except Christmas. Summer afternoons from May through September bring intense sun exposure, making morning visits between 9 AM and noon ideal. Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shaded pavilions near the entry gate and African savanna section.
