Snorkel Spot

Diamond Head Beach Snorkel

Honolulu

About This Place

Diamond Head Beach offers protected snorkeling in a small cove beneath Honolulu's most famous crater. The rocky shoreline creates calm, clear waters where tropical fish, green sea turtles, and colorful coral formations thrive just steps from shore. This spot suits confident swimmers and intermediate snorkelers. Entry requires scrambling over lava rocks with no sandy beach - only volcanic rock ledges. Experienced snorkelers appreciate the underwater visibility and abundant marine life, while beginners often struggle with the rocky entry. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, snorkel gear, and water shoes with solid grip for slippery rocks. Pack plenty of water since no facilities exist nearby. A mesh bag helps carry wet gear back up the trail. Parking fills quickly at the small roadside pullout on Diamond Head Road. Arrive before 9am to secure a spot, especially weekends. No entrance fees apply, but Diamond Head State Monument parking serves as backup when the beach lot fills. Early morning provides the calmest conditions and best visibility. Afternoon trade winds create choppy surface conditions that reduce snorkeling quality. Sun reflects intensely off water and surrounding rocks, so reapply sunscreen frequently. Watch for strong currents near the cove's outer edges, particularly during high surf. Stay within the protected inner areas where water remains relatively calm. Rocks become extremely slippery when wet - move carefully during entry and exit. Check surf conditions before visiting since high surf makes this spot dangerous for snorkeling. Winter months from November through March typically bring larger swells that can make conditions unsafe.
