About This Place

Electric Beach gets its name from the nearby power plant that discharges warm water into the ocean, creating an artificial reef that attracts abundant marine life. This West Oahu snorkeling spot draws large schools of tropical fish, green sea turtles, and occasional dolphins to its consistently warm waters. The warm water discharge creates exceptional visibility and comfortable swimming conditions year-round. Schools of tropical fish congregate near the concrete outflow pipes, with regular turtle encounters in the surrounding area. The site suits intermediate snorkelers who can handle mild currents and water depths of 15-25 feet. Park in the small dirt lot off Farrington Highway. The lot fills quickly on weekends, so arrive before 8am for guaranteed parking and optimal conditions. No entry fees apply, but bring reef-safe shoes for navigating the rocky shoreline. No gear rentals exist nearby, so pack your own snorkel equipment. Morning hours before 10am offer the calmest water and clearest visibility. Afternoon visits bring stronger currents, more crowds, and direct sun glare since the site faces west. Winter months (November through March) typically provide the smoothest ocean conditions. The warm water discharge creates mild but noticeable currents near the outflow pipes. Rocky entry points require careful footing, and the coral and lava rock bottom can be sharp. Maintain at least 10 feet from sea turtles - federal law protects these animals. This spot requires moderate swimming ability due to deeper water and occasional currents. Beginning snorkelers and young children should consider easier locations first.
