About This Place

Hanauma Bay offers Oahu's most accessible coral reef snorkeling in a protected volcanic crater turned marine sanctuary. The curved bay shelters calm, clear waters where tropical fish swim among living coral formations just steps from the sandy beach. Green sea turtles glide through the shallows, and schools of yellow tangs create moving clouds of color. This spot works best for beginning to intermediate snorkelers. The shallow reef extends about 100 yards from shore, with depths ranging from three to twelve feet. Strong swimmers can venture to the deeper outer reef, but most visitors find plenty to see in the protected inner bay. Arrive by 7 AM since the park limits daily visitors to 1,400 and often reaches capacity by 9 AM. Entry costs $25 for non-residents, and you'll watch a brief conservation video before accessing the beach. The bay opens at 6 AM Wednesday through Monday and closes Tuesdays for maintenance. Parking fills quickly in the small lot above the crater. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, snorkel gear if you have it, and water shoes for the rocky entry points along the beach's edges. Rental equipment costs $20 on-site. The walk down to the beach takes five minutes on a paved path, but the return climb gains 200 feet of elevation and proves challenging in afternoon heat. Ocean conditions stay calmest from 6 AM to 10 AM before trade winds pick up. December through March brings larger swells and reduced visibility. Respect the coral by looking without touching, and watch for strong currents near the bay's mouth. The intense tropical sun reflects off the water, so reapply sunscreen every hour.
