The East Oahu Self-Guided Kayak Experience starts at the Active Oahu Tours storefront in Kailua, where staff fit a kayak to the roof of a personal vehicle using foam pads and straps or rigid racks. From there, paddlers drive themselves to a launch point along the windward coast and explore at their own pace.
Routes run along the east side of Oahu, including options near offshore seabird sanctuaries in Kailua and the Rainforest Valley of Ahupua'a O Kahana. Guides at the storefront can recommend a route based on conditions and what a paddler is hoping to do. All gear comes with the rental: kayaks, paddles, life vests, dry bags, snorkeling gear, seatbacks, a kayak leash, and a route map with additional information.
Paddlers should bring reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a towel, and shoes that can handle both water and hiking.
