About This Place

Waimea Valley combines botanical gardens with Hawaiian cultural history along a gentle mile-long trail that leads to a 45-foot waterfall where you can swim. The 1,875-acre valley houses over 5,000 plant species from around the Pacific, including rare native Hawaiian plants, plus archaeological sites that date back over 700 years. The paved trail works for most fitness levels, though the return walk uphill from the falls adds moderate difficulty. Plan two to four hours for the full experience. Families with kids enjoy the easy terrain and waterfall swimming, while plant enthusiasts spend hours exploring the specialized gardens including hibiscus, heliconia, and endangered Hawaiian species collections. Cultural demonstrations featuring traditional crafts and hula happen Tuesday through Saturday afternoons. Admission costs $25 for adults, with $15 rates for Hawaii residents and military. The valley opens at 9 AM daily, closing at 5 PM October through April and 6 PM May through September. Arrive between 9-10 AM or after 3 PM to avoid midday heat and tour groups that peak from 11 AM to 2 PM. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water, snacks, and swimming gear. The gift shop sells forgotten essentials like water shoes and snacks. Free parking fills up on weekends and holidays, especially during summer months. Walking shoes work fine since the main trail stays paved, though side trails turn muddy after rain from October through March. The waterfall pool stays refreshingly cool year-round at about 70 degrees, but respect posted swimming rules and watch for slippery rocks. No lifeguards patrol the area. Heavy winter rains occasionally close the falls temporarily for safety, so check their website before visiting between December and February.
