About This Place

Nuuanu Pali Lookout offers one of Oahu's most dramatic panoramic views, stretching across the windward coast from the Ko'olau Mountains to Kaneohe Bay. This historic viewpoint sits 1,200 feet above sea level where King Kamehameha I's warriors drove Oahu defenders over the cliff during the 1795 Battle of Nuuanu, uniting the Hawaiian Islands. The lookout faces northeast, making morning visits between 7am and 9am ideal for photography when sunlight illuminates the emerald valleys and distant ocean. Trade winds funnel through the mountain pass with surprising force year-round, so bring a jacket even on 80-degree days. The wind can knock over small children and adults, so hold onto hats, phones, and loose items tightly. The paved path from the parking area to the viewing platform takes less than two minutes, though it slopes slightly upward. No admission fee required, and the site stays open 24 hours daily. Free parking fills quickly during peak hours between 10am and 3pm, especially weekends. Arrive before 8am or after 4pm for smaller crowds and better lighting. Tour buses frequent this spot midday, bringing dozens of visitors at once. Walk past the main viewing area to the left for equally stunning views with fewer people crowding the railings. The restroom facilities are basic but clean. Avoid visiting during heavy rain when visibility drops to zero and metal railings become slippery. Rain showers typically pass within 15 minutes here, so wait them out rather than driving back down the winding road immediately. Winter months from December through February bring more frequent afternoon showers.
