About This Place

Kailua Beach Park stretches along one of Oahu's most photographed coastlines, where powdery white sand meets turquoise water that looks almost artificial in its brilliance. The beach consistently ranks among the world's best, drawing families, couples, and solo travelers who want classic Hawaiian beauty without the Waikiki crowds. The water stays calm most days, protected by offshore islands that create ideal conditions for swimming, snorkeling, and stand-up paddleboarding. Kayakers paddle out to the nearby Mokulua Islands, also called the Mokes, for secluded beaches and seabird watching. The consistent trade winds make this a favorite spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing, though beginners should stick to the gentler waters near the main beach. Arrive before 9am to claim parking in the small lot behind the beach or find street parking along Kailua Road. By 11am, finding a spot becomes nearly impossible as tour groups and day-trippers flood in. The beach has no entry fee and stays open 24 hours, though most visitors come between sunrise and sunset. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, plenty of water, and snacks since the closest food options require a 10-minute drive into Kailua town. Beach gear rentals are available from shops along Kailua Road. The park provides restrooms, outdoor showers, and picnic tables under ironwood trees that offer decent shade during midday heat. Watch for strong currents on windy days, particularly near the northern end of the beach. The sun reflects intensely off the white sand and water, so reapply sunscreen every hour. Lifeguards are not always on duty, so swim within your abilities and stay aware of changing ocean conditions.
