Kailua Bay & Popoia Island Self-Guided Kayaking

The adventure starts at a meeting point in Kailua, where tandem kayaks, life vests, seat backs, and paddles are provided. Foam pads and straps make it straightforward to transport the gear from the meeting point to the beach using a personal vehicle.

The route takes paddlers across the bay, which is protected by a large coral reef, and out to Popoia Island, a Hawaiian bird sanctuary. The permit included with the rental covers landing on both Popoia Islet and Mokulua Nui Islet. The surrounding reef is habitat for sea turtles and fish. The trip suits those who want to explore at their own pace rather than follow a guided group.

The physical intensity is rated moderate, and basic swimming ability is required. The activity is weather dependent, so conditions on the day can affect whether it runs. Meals, gratuity, and transportation to the meeting point are not included.
