Forest Bathing at Moanalua Gardens

The grounds hold monkeypod trees, native and tropical plants, and historic buildings, including the Hitachi Tree, which Hawaii has designated an exceptional tree.

The walk is gentle and slow, moving across lawns and through quieter sections of the grounds, mostly under tree shade. A certified forest therapy guide leads the group through a series of sensory-focused invitations drawn from shinrin-yoku, a public health practice rooted in Japan with decades of research behind it. Participants have time for quiet contemplation and for sharing with the group. Tea and light snacks are provided, along with the gardens admission fee.

This experience suits adults and older teenagers looking for a mindful, unhurried connection with nature rather than physical challenge. The walk is conducted in English. A minimum number of participants is required for the walk to run, and the operator contacts participants in advance if that threshold is not reached.
