About this experience
Honolulu is one of those rare places where learning to surf actually makes sense on a short trip. Kai Sallas' Pro Surf School Hawaii runs beginner group surf lessons in Honolulu, with groups kept to 4 to 6 students so you're not lost in a crowd.
Before anyone touches the water, there's a solid 20-minute land session - positioning on the board, paddling technique, how to maneuver over waves, turning, getting to your feet, stance, balance, and safety rules. It's thorough without being overwhelming. From there, instructors stay in the water with you the whole time, helping you catch waves and find your feet. First-timers do well here, and so do people who've had a go at it before and want to actually get it right this time.
The meeting point is 2863 Kalakaua Ave. #102. Everything's included: surfboard, rashguards, reef shoes, and leash. Show up and you're ready.
A few things to know before booking: participants need to be 11 or older and able to swim. Kids 10 and under need to book a private lesson instead. Cancel with 48 hours' notice and you'll get a full refund. If Kai Sallas' Pro Surf School Hawaii cancels for weather or anything unforeseen, same deal - full refund. No-shows are charged in full.
If a beginner group surf lesson in Honolulu is on your Oahu list, book it early in the trip so you've got the rest of the island ahead of you.
