Here on Oahu, we've got something truly special—a conservation snorkeling tour with sea turtles Honolulu that's changing how visitors connect with our marine life. This isn't your typical tourist snorkel trip. The Ocean Alliance Project's flagship program turns every participant into a citizen scientist during this 5-6 hour adventure in Waikiki Bay's pristine waters.
You'll swim alongside Hawaiian green sea turtles at their favorite cleaning stations, but here's where it gets exciting: you're actually helping protect them. Armed with underwater cameras, you'll photograph each turtle's unique facial features from both sides. Those images get fed into i3s pattern software—think facial recognition for turtles—creating individual "faceprints" that researchers use to track migration patterns, monitor population health, and study individual behaviors. Pretty incredible that your vacation photos contribute to real science, right?
Our expert guides know these waters intimately and share fascinating insights about turtle ecology while leading you through Waikiki Bay's underwater world. They'll explain the conservation challenges these gentle giants face and why this hands-on approach matters so much.
The program welcomes anyone who can swim and stay afloat for 10 minutes in open water, with all professional snorkeling equipment provided. Kids must be at least 10 years old and meet our swimming requirements for open water conditions.
Tours start at 10 AM sharp from Waikiki Dive Center at 424 Nahua Street. Please arrive 15 minutes early.
