Corsair Wreck

Hawaii KaiHonolulu

About This Place

The Corsair wreck rests 105 feet down off Oahu's southeast coast, presenting one of Hawaii's most challenging deep dives. This intact F4U Corsair fighter plane crashed in 1946 and sits remarkably preserved on the sandy bottom, its propeller, cockpit, and wings clearly visible through 80 to 150 feet of visibility on calm days. Advanced divers find green sea turtles, white tip reef sharks, and barracuda schools circling the historic aircraft. The plane creates dramatic photo opportunities against the deep blue water, but the 105-foot depth limits bottom time to 20-25 minutes on air. Nitrox certification extends your time with this underwater piece of World War II history. Boat charters from Maunalua Bay provide the only access, launching between 7 AM and 9 AM when morning conditions stay calmest. The 15-minute boat ride delivers you to coordinates where strong currents demand advanced open water certification minimum. Most operators won't take divers without deep water experience. Park at Maunalua Bay's waterfront meters for $3 per hour, or find free street parking two blocks inland along residential streets. Bring your own gear or arrange rental through charter operators who know this site's specific requirements. Summer months from May through September offer the most reliable conditions and fewest cancellations. Winter swells frequently shut down access from November through March, making trip planning essential. Strong currents and the wreck's depth make proper dive planning non-negotiable. This site rewards experienced divers with Hawaii's most significant underwater historical attraction, but only those who respect its demanding conditions should attempt the descent.
