Diamond Head Lookout

Honolulu

About This Place

Diamond Head Lookout delivers panoramic views of Waikiki Beach, Honolulu's skyline, and the Pacific Ocean from 760 feet above sea level. This extinct volcanic crater requires a moderately challenging 0.8-mile hike up a steep, paved trail with concrete staircases and a tunnel carved through old military bunkers near the summit. The trail welcomes hikers of all ages, though the sustained incline and 99 steps make it demanding for visitors with mobility issues or heart conditions. Families with children over eight handle it well. The final ascent involves narrow spiral staircases through bunkers that may challenge those with claustrophobia. Arrive before 6:30 AM to secure parking - the 30-car lot fills by 7 AM on weekends and the trail becomes packed by mid-morning. The best lighting for photographs occurs during sunrise or the hour before sunset. Summer temperatures on the exposed concrete path reach 90 degrees with minimal shade between 10 AM and 4 PM. Entry costs $5 per person for non-residents plus a $10 vehicle fee. The trail closes at 6 PM daily. Consider walking from nearby street parking if the lot fills. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip - the concrete surface becomes slippery when wet from morning dew or brief showers. Pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat for the exposed sections. The sustained climb takes 20-45 minutes depending on fitness level and crowd size. Cell service remains strong throughout, perfect for sharing those sweeping shots of Oahu's south shore and the endless Pacific beyond.
