Hiking Trail

Crouching Lion

Kaaawa

About This Place

The Crouching Lion trail delivers one of Oahu's most rewarding short hikes, climbing to a distinctive rock formation that resembles a lion crouching on the ridge above Kaaawa Valley. This moderate 4-mile round trip takes you through dense tropical forest before opening onto exposed ridgelines with commanding views of the windward coast and Ko'olau Mountains. The trail requires some hiking experience and comfort with muddy, slippery conditions. You'll climb steep sections, navigate exposed roots, and traverse narrow ridge walks demanding sure footing. The payoff arrives at the "lion's head" viewpoint, where you peer down into the valley and across to Chinaman's Hat island. Start by 7 AM to beat afternoon trade wind clouds that frequently block views. The trail stays cool under forest canopy, but bring sun protection for exposed ridge sections. Pack ample water, snacks, and wear hiking shoes with aggressive tread. Mud is guaranteed, particularly after rain. Parking fills fast on weekends along Kamehameha Highway near the trailhead. Look for the informal dirt pullout - no facilities or fees exist. The trail becomes extremely hazardous in wet conditions due to slippery clay soil and steep drop-offs. Check weather before departing and retreat if rain approaches. Morning hours between 7-10 AM offer the clearest views year-round, though winter months bring more frequent rain. The rock formation appears most lion-like from specific angles along the ridge, so explore different viewpoints for the best photo perspective. Allow 3-4 hours total for a leisurely pace with photo stops.
