About This Place

Bellows Beach stretches along Oahu's windward coast as a protected military recreation area that opens to the public on weekends and holidays. This wide sandy beach offers gentler waves and fewer crowds than nearby Kailua Beach, perfect for families with young children and swimmers who prefer calmer conditions. The beach sits behind Bellows Air Force Station, requiring passage through a security checkpoint where guards check IDs. All visitors must be 18 or older to enter, though accompanied minors are welcome. The military setting keeps development minimal - you'll find basic restroom facilities but no food vendors or gear rentals. Bodysurfing conditions excel here when October through April trade winds pick up, creating consistent but manageable waves. The sandy bottom slopes gradually, giving hesitant swimmers confidence to wade out. Local families favor the left side near the camping area for calmer water and shade from ironwood trees. Free parking fills the dirt lots behind the beach. Arrive by 9 AM on weekends since the military caps daily visitors at around 400 people. Bring everything you need including water, snacks, and shade since the nearest stores sit three miles away in Waimanalo town. Strong afternoon trade winds kick up sand and topple beach umbrellas after 2 PM. Morning visits from 8 AM to noon offer the calmest conditions with lighter winds and smaller waves. Watch for Portuguese man-of-war jellyfish, especially during April through September, and always swim near other people since no lifeguards patrol this beach.
