Hiking Trail

Hauula Loop

Hauula

About This Place

The Hauula Loop Trail winds 2.5 miles through native Hawaiian forest on Oahu's windward coast. This moderate hike begins at a small roadside pullout off Kamehameha Highway and climbs gradually through ironwood groves and native ohia trees that provide shade for most sections. Intermediate hikers will find steep sections and uneven terrain, but the path stays clearly marked throughout. The loop configuration eliminates backtracking, and several viewpoints offer glimpses of coastline through the forest canopy. Expect muddy conditions and slippery surfaces after rain, particularly on exposed roots and stream crossings. Start between 6 and 8 AM or after 4 PM to avoid midday heat. Parking fills quickly on weekends at the small pullout near the trailhead. Arrive by 7 AM for the best chance at securing a spot. No entrance fees apply, and the trail remains accessible year-round, though summer months draw larger crowds. Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip prove essential on wet rocks and root systems. Bring ample water and insect repellent for the forested sections. Some stream crossings require careful navigation during heavy rains, and cliff areas lack guardrails. Plan two to three hours for the complete loop. The trail offers a solid introduction to Oahu's interior mountains without the extreme difficulty of higher peaks. Morning starts provide cooler temperatures and better parking availability, while late afternoon timing allows for comfortable completion before sunset. The native forest setting delivers a different perspective of Oahu beyond the typical beach experience.
