Hiking Trail

Kaiwa Ridge (Lanikai Pillbox)

KailuaWindward Oahu

About This Place

The Kaiwa Ridge trail leads to two concrete military bunkers from World War II, offering some of Oahu's most photographed ocean views. This moderate 1.8-mile round-trip hike gains 600 feet of elevation through ironwood trees and opens to panoramic vistas of Lanikai Beach's turquoise waters and the offshore Mokulua Islands. The rocky, uneven terrain requires sturdy shoes with good grip. Loose dirt and embedded rocks make sections slippery, especially after rain. The path splits partway up - the right fork reaches the first pillbox in about 20 minutes, while the left continuation leads to the second bunker with superior views. Start by 7 AM to avoid crowds and intense midday sun. The exposed ridge offers minimal shade, making afternoon hikes uncomfortably hot. Sunrise creates golden light on the water below, while late afternoon provides dramatic shadows across the coastline. Parking fills quickly at the small dirt lot on Kaelepulu Drive near the Mid-Pacific Country Club. Street parking along nearby residential roads serves as backup, but respect private driveways and posted signs. No fees apply for the hike. Bring at least one liter of water per person, plus sun protection and snacks. The steep sections and Hawaiian sun drain energy faster than mainland visitors expect. Cell service remains strong throughout the trail. Rain makes the trail treacherous, so check conditions before heading up. The bunkers provide perfect frames for photos of the twin islands and beach below, explaining why this short hike draws photographers and social media enthusiasts year-round.
