About This Place

The Kuliouou Ridge Trail delivers one of Oahu's most rewarding moderate hikes, climbing through native forest to panoramic views of Hawaii Kai, Hanauma Bay, and the windward coast. This 5-mile roundtrip trail gains 1,800 feet in elevation, offering a solid workout without extreme difficulty. The trail begins in a residential neighborhood and enters a canopy of native ohia and koa trees. After an hour of steady climbing through switchbacks, you reach the ridgeline where the real payoff begins. The final section follows the narrow ridge with ocean views on both sides before reaching the summit lookout. Start before 7 AM to beat crowds and heat. The exposed ridge section offers little shade, so bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat. Trail conditions turn muddy and slippery after rain, so wear shoes with good traction. The narrow ridge requires careful footing and isn't suitable for young children or anyone uncomfortable with drop-offs. Park along Kuliouou Road near the trailhead and look for the small trail marker and wooden stairs leading into the forest. No parking fees apply, but spaces fill quickly on weekends. The trail stays open year-round with no entry fees. Avoid hiking during heavy rain or high winds when the ridge becomes dangerous. Allow 3-4 hours total, and bring layers since the summit runs significantly cooler and windier than the base. Summer mornings offer the clearest views, while winter brings occasional muddy conditions but fewer crowds.
