Kuli'ou'ou Valley Trail

About This Place

The Kuli'ou'ou Valley Trail cuts through one of Oahu's most rewarding ridge hikes, climbing 2.5 miles to panoramic views of Koko Head, Hanauma Bay, and the southeastern coastline. This moderately challenging trail gains 1,800 feet of elevation through native forest before emerging onto an exposed ridge with sweeping ocean vistas. The hike suits intermediate hikers comfortable with steep sections and uneven terrain. The initial mile winds through shaded ironwood and Norfolk pine groves, then transitions to a narrow ridge with drop-offs on both sides. The final push requires scrambling over rocks and roots, but the 360-degree summit views reward the effort. Start by 6:30 AM to avoid afternoon heat and trade wind clouds that frequently obscure views after 11 AM. The exposed ridge section offers no shade, making sun protection essential. Bring at least three liters of water per person, SPF 30 sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and hiking boots with aggressive tread. The red dirt trail becomes muddy and slippery during Oahu's October through March rainy season. Free street parking lines Kuli'ou'ou Road near the trailhead, though the 15 available spaces fill by 7 AM on weekends. The narrow residential street prohibits overnight parking and has no facilities. Consider Tuesday through Thursday visits for guaranteed parking. Exercise extreme caution on the knife-edge ridge sections, particularly when trade winds exceed 20 mph. Trail markers appear sporadically after mile 1.5, so follow the worn path along the ridgeline. Rain transforms the clay soil into hazardous mud, so postpone during wet weather. Allow five hours for the round trip, including 45 minutes at the summit.
