About This Place

This 1.6-mile round trip hike through tropical rainforest leads to a 150-foot waterfall that flows year-round into a small swimming pool. The well-maintained dirt trail gains 800 feet of elevation as it winds through dense jungle filled with bamboo groves, wild ginger, and massive banyan trees. The moderate difficulty makes this trail accessible to most hikers, including families with children over eight. You'll encounter muddy sections and steep areas, but the path remains clearly marked throughout. The final approach requires scrambling over rocks to reach the waterfall base. Start by 7 AM to avoid crowds and afternoon rain showers that frequently drench the area between 11 AM and 3 PM. The trail gets packed by mid-morning with tour groups. Morning light also filters through the canopy perfectly for photos. Bring sturdy hiking shoes with good grip since the trail stays muddy even during dry periods from April through September. Pack water, snacks, and a light rain jacket. Mosquito repellent helps, though trade winds usually keep bugs manageable on the trail. Free street parking fills up quickly along Manoa Road near the trailhead. Arrive by 7 AM or park further down and walk 10 minutes. No entrance fees apply. The area stays cool and shaded, making sunscreen less critical than on coastal hikes. Watch your footing on wet rocks near the waterfall. Swimming is possible but the water runs cold year-round at 65 degrees. Flash flooding can occur during heavy rains, particularly November through March, so check weather conditions before heading out.
