About This Place

The Olomana Trail challenges hikers with a demanding ridge climb that rewards experienced adventurers with panoramic views across Oahu's windward coast. This technical trail ascends three distinct peaks, though most hikers turn back after reaching the first summit at 1,643 feet. The trail demands serious preparation and experience. Steep, muddy sections require scrambling over roots and rocks, while several spots involve rope-assisted climbs up near-vertical rock faces. The second and third peaks become increasingly dangerous, with knife-edge ridges and significant exposure that claim lives each year. Stick to the first peak unless you're an expert climber with proper gear. Start before 7 AM to avoid afternoon trade wind gusts and potential storms. The 2.5-mile round trip to the first peak typically takes 3-4 hours. Bring sturdy hiking boots with excellent grip, work gloves for rope sections, and more water than you think you need. Pack rain gear since weather changes rapidly on the ridge. Park along Auloa Road near the trailhead, but spots fill quickly on weekends. No fees apply, but respect private property signs in the residential area. The trail stays open year-round, though winter months from December through March bring more frequent rain and slippery conditions. This trail suits experienced hikers comfortable with exposure and scrambling. Beginners should choose easier options like Diamond Head or Makapuu Lighthouse. Turn back immediately if conditions deteriorate or if you feel uncomfortable with the terrain. Cell service remains spotty throughout the hike, so inform someone of your plans before heading out.
