About This Place

The Pillbox Trail in Lanikai rewards hikers with stunning panoramic views of the turquoise Lanikai and Kailua beaches from two concrete military bunkers built during World War II. This moderate 1.5-mile out-and-back trail climbs steadily uphill through dry scrubland, gaining about 600 feet of elevation over rocky, uneven terrain. The trail suits moderately fit hikers who can handle steep, sometimes slippery sections. Families with older children often tackle this hike, though the terrain requires sturdy footwear and careful footing. The pillboxes themselves offer perfect photo opportunities and rest spots with shade. Parking fills up quickly along Kaelepulu Drive near the Mid-Pacific Country Club. Arrive before 8 AM or after 4 PM to find a spot, as street parking is extremely limited and no official lot exists. The trail has no fees or gates - you can hike anytime, though early morning provides cooler temperatures and better lighting for photos. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and wear hiking shoes with good grip. The exposed trail offers little shade, making midday hikes particularly challenging in Hawaii's intense sun. Morning hikes between 6-9 AM also provide the best views before afternoon clouds roll in during the rainy season from November through March. Watch for loose rocks and steep drop-offs near the pillboxes. The trail becomes muddy and slippery after rain, especially during winter months. Cell service remains spotty on parts of the trail, so let someone know your hiking plans. The combination of military history and breathtaking coastal views makes this short but rewarding climb a favorite among both locals and visitors.
