Pu'u Manamana

Pu'u Manamana offers one of Oahu's most challenging ridge hikes, climbing 2,100 feet through native forest to panoramic views of the Windward Coast. This steep, technical trail demands serious hiking experience and should not be attempted by beginners. The narrow ridge sections require scrambling over roots and rocks, with significant drop-offs on both sides. The trailhead sits along Kahekili Highway near Kahana Bay, with limited roadside parking that fills by 8 AM on weekends. No fees apply, but arrive before 7 AM to secure a spot and avoid afternoon trade winds that make the exposed ridge dangerous. The hike takes 4-6 hours roundtrip depending on your pace and comfort with the technical sections. Experienced hikers seek out this trail for solitude and commanding views across Kaneohe Bay, the Ko'olau Range, and Chinaman's Hat. The path cuts through dense native vegetation including koa and ohia trees, then emerges onto the knife-edge ridge that gives Pu'u Manamana its dramatic character. Morning hours from 7-11 AM provide the clearest views before afternoon clouds roll in. Bring plenty of water, sturdy hiking boots with aggressive tread, gloves for better grip on rocky sections, and rain gear since weather changes rapidly at this elevation.
