About This Place

The Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail climbs through native Hawaiian forest to reach some of Oahu's most rewarding panoramic views. This moderate 5-mile round-trip hike gains 1,800 feet of elevation as it winds through Cook pines, Norfolk pines, and native ohia trees before reaching a ridgeline lookout with sweeping views of Honolulu, Diamond Head, and the windward coast. The trail suits hikers comfortable with steady uphill sections and occasional scrambling over roots and rocks. Start between 6-7 AM for cooler temperatures and clearer views before afternoon clouds roll in around 11 AM. The trailhead opens at sunrise, and most hikers complete the journey in 3-4 hours. Park along Kuliouou Road near the residential area and look for the small trail marker. Follow the initial paved section that becomes a dirt path within 100 yards. No entry fees apply. The trail turns muddy and slippery after rain, particularly during winter months from November through March when afternoon showers occur frequently. Bring two liters of water per person, snacks, and sun protection. The initial forest section provides shade for the first mile, but the ridge section exposes you to direct sun and strong trade winds. Sturdy hiking shoes with aggressive tread help navigate the root-covered sections and steep grades, especially on the descent. The trail's native forest setting and ridge views provide both urban Honolulu and untouched valley perspectives from the same vantage point. Stick to the main trail, as side paths lead to dangerous cliff edges. Check weather conditions before heading out, as rain makes the already challenging root sections treacherous and potentially hazardous.
