Scenic Drive

Pali Highway

Honolulu

About This Place

The Pali Highway cuts through Oahu's Ko'olau Mountains, connecting Honolulu's urban core to the windward coast's towering cliffs and valleys. This 15-mile route follows the path ancient Hawaiians carved between regions, culminating at Nu'uanu Pali Lookout where King Kamehameha I won his decisive 1795 battle to unite the islands. The real attraction awaits at Nu'uanu Pali Lookout, perched 1,200 feet above sea level. Trade winds funnel through this mountain pass with enough force to knock you backward. The panoramic view spans Kailua and Kaneohe below, with the Mokulua Islands visible on clear mornings. The constant wind makes tripods essential for photographers and renders hats completely useless. Drive the full highway between 7 and 9 AM when clouds haven't yet obscured the peaks. Free parking fills by 10 AM on weekends, so arrive early. The lookout requires only a two-minute walk from your car on paved paths, making it accessible for most visitors. However, the relentless wind and exposed position demand layers and secure clothing. The wind genuinely threatens to push people around, especially children and smaller adults. Stay behind barriers and grip cameras with both hands. The lookout closes during high wind warnings and severe weather. Bring a jacket regardless of the day's temperature. The elevation and wind create surprisingly cool conditions even when Honolulu hits 85 degrees. The drive takes 30 minutes from downtown without stops, but plan an hour total for photos and wind-fighting at the lookout. The experience proves unforgettable once you regain your balance.
