About This Place

Lanai Lookout delivers one of Oahu's most spectacular ocean views without the crowds that mob other famous viewpoints. This roadside pull-off on the southeast shore provides panoramic vistas across the Kauiwi Channel to the island of Lanai, plus sweeping views of Maui and Molokai on clear days. The rocky coastline below creates dramatic white water displays as waves crash against the cliffs. Humpback whales frequently surface in these waters during winter months, making this an excellent whale watching spot from December through April. Year-round, you might spot dolphins, sea turtles, or Hawaiian monk seals. The viewpoint sits directly off Kalanianaole Highway with a small unpaved parking area that fills by 9am on weekends. Arrive before 8am for the best lighting and fewer visitors. The site has no facilities, so bring water and sun protection. Strong trade winds blow consistently here, providing relief from the heat but making umbrellas worthless. This stop works for all ages since it requires no hiking. The viewing area has a low stone wall, but parents should supervise children closely as the cliff drops 100 feet to the ocean below. The rocks become slippery when wet from ocean spray. Most visitors spend 15-30 minutes taking photos and absorbing the view. The lookout makes an ideal quick stop while driving the scenic southeastern coast, especially when combined with nearby Hanauma Bay or Sandy Beach. Free parking and no admission fees make this accessible to any budget. The viewpoint remains open 24 hours daily.
