Open Water Shark Dive
Despite the name, this is a snorkeling experience, not scuba diving. Participants stay at the surface above deeper water, which is where pelagic species travel. During whale season, humpback whales are also possible. Underwater photography is a natural fit for this outing. Before entering the water, a captain delivers a safety briefing aboard the boat, and a Divemaster covers equipment use, marine life identification, and conservation topics with photos and visual aids. A Certified Underwater Naturalist is also on board. The Divemaster enters the water first and evaluates conditions before calling participants in. Confident swimmers are suited to this tour. Pregnant travelers cannot participate. The physical intensity is moderate, no food or drinks are included, and no scuba certification is needed.
Whale Watching
This whale watching tour goes out on the ocean around Oahu, covering the Waianae Mountain Range, Kaena Point, Waimea Bay, and north toward Turtle Bay. During the fall, winter, and early spring months of whale season, Humpback Whales are visible and their unique songs can be heard. Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles are a regular presence on the water, and Monk Seals, Manta Rays, Stingrays, pods of spinner dolphins, and seabirds including Boobies, Frigate birds, and Albatross may also appear. Hawaii Adventure Diving encourages both underwater and above-water photography throughout the trip, so a camera is a good item to bring along. Sunscreen and a light jacket are also recommended. No food or drinks are included, so arriving prepared is a practical step. The tour is run by Hawaii Adventure Diving, based in Waianae on Oahu, and gives participants a chance to observe marine life and take in the surrounding coastal scenery from out on the open ocean.
