Burial At Sea

Burial At Sea is a ceremony service that allows families and friends to scatter a loved one's ashes into the ocean off Waikīkī, beneath Diamond Head, aboard a traditional outrigger canoe. The canoe crew paddles out to open water, where participants can say a prayer, sing a song, or reflect in silence. The ceremony closes with "the last wave," a Waikīkī Beachboy tradition in which the canoe rides a wave back to shore as a final tribute to the deceased.

The service meets at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on Kalākaua Ave. Flowers and leis are not provided but guests may bring their own. An officiant and music are also not included. Wear comfortable clothing that can get wet, and check in at the service counter before the scheduled time. All participants must complete an electronic liability waiver, which arrives with the confirmation email. The tour may be rescheduled or canceled when surf or ocean conditions are unpredictable.
