Goat Island (Mokuauia)

LaieNorth Shore Oahu

About This Place

Goat Island sits just offshore from Laie Beach Park, connected to the mainland by a narrow sandbar you can walk across at low tide. This small, rocky islet offers some of Oahu's best snorkeling in protected waters filled with tropical fish, green sea turtles, and coral formations. The walk to the island takes about 10 minutes across knee-deep water and sand. Time your visit for low tide, typically between 6-9 AM, when the crossing is easiest and snorkeling conditions are calmest. High tide makes the walk challenging, and strong currents develop on the ocean side of the island. Families choose this spot because the lagoon between the island and shore stays relatively shallow and calm. The snorkeling here rivals Hanauma Bay but without the crowds or entry fees. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, snorkel gear, water shoes for the rocky areas, and plenty of water since no facilities exist on the island itself. Park at Laie Beach Park, which has restrooms, showers, and picnic tables. Parking fills up quickly on weekends, so arrive by 7 AM. The beach park is free and open daily from sunrise to sunset. Stay on the protected lagoon side for beginning snorkelers. The ocean side has strong currents and waves that can push you against the rocks. Respect the wildlife by maintaining distance from sea turtles and avoiding touching the coral. The combination of easy access, excellent snorkeling, and dramatic mountain views makes Goat Island a standout among Oahu's beach destinations. Winter months from December through March bring calmer conditions and better visibility underwater.
