Kahanamoku Beach

About This Place

Kahanamoku Beach stretches along the calmer western end of Waikiki, offering a more relaxed alternative to the crowded central beaches. Named after legendary surfer Duke Kahanamoku, this sandy stretch sits between the Hilton Hawaiian Village and Fort DeRussy, creating a natural buffer from the busiest tourist zones. The beach appeals to families and swimmers who prefer gentler waves and fewer crowds. The protected lagoon area near the Hilton provides especially calm water for children and nervous swimmers. Small waves still roll in regularly, making it suitable for beginner surfers and boogie boarders without the intimidation factor of larger breaks. Parking proves challenging since most nearby spaces serve hotel guests. Street parking along Ala Moana Boulevard offers your best option, or try the paid lots near Fort DeRussy at $3 per hour. Many visitors walk from other Waikiki locations or take the pink trolley line that stops at the Hilton. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, as Hawaii law prohibits harmful chemicals that damage coral. Pack an umbrella for shade, snorkel equipment for exploring the calmer waters, and plenty of water for hydration in the intense tropical sun. Early morning visits between 7 and 9 AM offer the most space and best light for photos. Late afternoon from 4 to 6 PM provides beautiful sunset views over the water. The beach stays open 24 hours with no entry fees. Watch for occasional strong currents near the channel between the beach and offshore reefs, particularly during winter months from December through March. The rocky areas at both ends become slippery when wet. Reapply sunscreen every two hours.
