About This Place

Makaha Beach stretches along Oahu's west coast as one of the island's premier surfing destinations. This wide, golden sand beach gained legendary status in the surfing world during the 1960s and remains a proving ground for big wave riders today. Winter swells from November through March can reach 15 feet or higher, creating spectacular waves that attract experienced surfers from around the globe. The beach serves different visitors depending on the season. Summer months from April through October bring calmer conditions perfect for swimming, bodyboarding, and families with children. Winter transforms Makaha into a dramatic arena where you can watch skilled surfers tackle powerful waves from the safety of the shore. Free parking fills the small lot early on good surf days, so arrive before 9 AM for the best spots. Street parking along Farrington Highway provides additional options. The beach has no facilities, so pack water, snacks, and shade. A beach umbrella or pop-up tent helps during intense midday sun from 11 AM to 3 PM. Ocean conditions change rapidly here. Strong currents and shore break make winter swimming dangerous for inexperienced ocean swimmers. Always check with locals or lifeguards about current conditions before entering the water. The beach lacks consistent lifeguard coverage, so exercise extra caution. Afternoon trade winds pick up regularly after 2 PM, making morning visits more comfortable. Sunset views face west across the Pacific, creating excellent evening photo opportunities. The drive from Waikiki takes 45 minutes via H1 and Farrington Highway. Makaha delivers authentic Hawaiian beach culture away from tourist crowds, but demands respect for its powerful ocean conditions.
