About This Place

Kahana Bay State Park offers one of Oahu's most protected swimming spots in a crescent-shaped bay on the windward coast. The calm, shallow waters make this beach ideal for families with young children and nervous swimmers who want to avoid the powerful shore breaks found elsewhere on the island. A wide sandy beach stretches along the bay, backed by ironwood trees that provide natural shade during the hot midday hours. The park attracts locals and visitors who prefer a quieter beach experience. You'll find fewer crowds here than at popular spots like Hanauma Bay, especially on weekdays. The protected waters stay relatively calm year-round, though winter months from November through February can bring occasional high surf advisories. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, plenty of water, and snacks since no food vendors operate nearby. The ironwood trees drop sharp needles that poke bare feet, so water shoes help when walking in shaded areas. Basic restrooms and outdoor showers are available, but no lifeguards patrol this beach. Free parking fills up quickly on weekends, so arrive before 10am for the best spots. The small lot accommodates about 20 cars, and street parking along Kamehameha Highway requires careful attention to no-parking signs. The park stays open from 7am to 7:45pm daily. Morning visits between 8am and 11am offer the calmest conditions and best light for photos. Even in this protected bay, always supervise children closely and watch for the occasional monk seal that may rest on the beach. Give these protected animals at least 150 feet of space if you encounter one.
