Mount Kaala

WaianaeWest Oahu

About This Place

Mount Kaala stands as Oahu's highest peak at 4,025 feet, offering panoramic views across the entire island on clear days. This remote viewpoint in the Waianae Mountains rewards hikers with sweeping vistas of the North Shore, Honolulu, and neighboring islands when conditions align. The challenging trail spans roughly 5 miles roundtrip through native forest and bog terrain. Expect muddy, slippery conditions year-round, especially after rain. The path crosses several stream beds and climbs steadily through dense vegetation before emerging at the summit's restricted military radar facility. While you can't access the actual peak due to security fencing, viewpoints along the final approach provide excellent photo opportunities. This hike suits experienced adventurers comfortable with difficult terrain and navigation challenges. The trail lacks clear markers in sections, making it easy to lose your way. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sturdy hiking boots with good traction, rain gear, and a first aid kit. A GPS device or smartphone with offline maps proves essential for route-finding. Park along Waianae Valley Road near the trailhead between 6-7 AM for best availability, as space remains extremely limited. No fees apply, though access depends on military training schedules that occasionally close the area without notice. Start before sunrise to maximize your chances of clear summit views before afternoon clouds roll in around 10-11 AM. Weather changes rapidly at elevation, so prepare for 15-20 degree temperature drops and sudden rain squalls. Tell someone your hiking plans and expected return time before heading out.
