Puu Ualakaa State Park

Honolulu

About This Place

Puu Ualakaa State Park sits 1,048 feet above Honolulu on Round Top Drive, providing one of Oahu's most accessible panoramic viewpoints. From the grassy picnic area, you see Diamond Head, downtown Honolulu's skyline, Pearl Harbor, and the Waianae Mountains stretching across the island's west side. On clear days between 7 AM and 10 AM, before afternoon clouds build, the view extends to Molokai and Lanai. The park works well for families with young children since the viewing area requires a 50-yard walk from the parking lot along a paved path. The main overlook is wheelchair accessible. Picnic tables, restrooms, and small pavilions make this ideal for lunch with a view. Free parking fills up by 9 AM on weekends and by 11 AM on weekdays, so arrive at the 7 AM opening for the best spots and clearest skies. The park closes at 6:45 PM from April through September and 6 PM from October through March. Sunset visits draw tour groups and locals, making parking nearly impossible after 5 PM. Bring sunscreen, water, and a light jacket since temperatures drop 10-15 degrees with elevation and trade winds intensify on the ridge. The concrete viewing platform becomes slippery during Honolulu's frequent light showers, and minimal barriers protect the steep drop-off, requiring close supervision of children. The drive up Round Top Drive involves narrow, winding roads with hairpin turns and limited shoulder space. Drive slowly and pull into the few available turnouts to let faster traffic pass. Morning visits between 7-10 AM consistently offer the clearest visibility before clouds form over the mountains.
