Moniz Family /VS SURF LESSON
The instructor answers questions on the sand, then paddles out alongside each student to the smaller waves. From the water, the instructor watches for good waves, calls out when to start paddling, and gives a push when needed, then coaches between rides with tips and corrections. Soft-top beginner boards and a surf shirt are provided. Students should bring a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, a snack, and water. The lesson suits people who are comfortable in the water and consider themselves good swimmers. Those who are not strong swimmers are directed toward a private session instead. Participants should arrive already sunscreened and ready to get in the water. The instructor was born and raised in Hawaii and has surfed widely, bringing that background to the teaching on the water.
About
Each lesson begins on the beach with a short tutorial covering how to paddle out without getting wiped out, how to turn the board, how to catch waves, and what to do when things go wrong. The instructor also takes time before heading into the water to answer any question a student brings.
Once the on-sand portion is done, the instructor paddles out alongside each student and stays right next to them in the water. The lesson is described as oriented toward getting first waves, so someone coming with little to no surfing background will find the structure appropriate.
