About This Place

The twin Mokulua Islands sit a half-mile offshore from Lanikai Beach, accessible only by kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or swimming. These two small islets offer some of Oahu's most pristine snorkeling and complete isolation despite sitting just 30 minutes from Honolulu. The larger island, Moku Nui, allows visitors to land on its sandy beach and explore tidal pools along the rocky coastline. The smaller Moku Iki remains a seabird sanctuary where landing is prohibited, but the surrounding waters provide excellent snorkeling with sea turtles and tropical fish. Both islands feature dramatic sea cliffs and offer clear views back toward the Koolau Mountains. This trip suits confident swimmers and kayakers comfortable in open ocean conditions. The channel crossing takes 20-30 minutes depending on your pace and ocean conditions. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, plenty of water, snorkeling gear, and waterproof bags for your belongings. Most visitors rent kayaks from Kailua Beach outfitters rather than hauling their own gear. Park along residential Kailua streets or at Lanikai Beach access points, though spots fill completely by 9 AM. No fees apply for the islands themselves, though kayak rentals cost $60-80 per day. Early morning launches between 7-9 AM offer the calmest seas and available parking. Strong trade winds and choppy conditions make afternoon crossings more challenging, especially during winter months from November through March. Watch for powerful currents between the islands and always inform someone of your plans before heading out. Check surf and wind forecasts the night before your trip.
