About This Place

Waimea Falls drops 45 feet into a swimming pool surrounded by tropical gardens in Oahu's North Shore. The 60-foot-wide waterfall sits at the end of a paved, mostly flat three-quarter-mile trail through the Waimea Valley botanical garden. This makes it one of Hawaii's most accessible waterfalls, perfect for families with young kids, seniors, or anyone who wants to see a waterfall without hiking steep terrain. The trail takes 20 to 30 minutes each way and passes over 5,000 plant species from around the Pacific. You'll walk through sections of native Hawaiian forest, see peacocks roaming the grounds, and spot archaeological sites including ancient Hawaiian terraces and temples. Lifeguards monitor the swimming area daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, and the water stays refreshingly cool year-round at around 70 degrees. Arrive between 9 and 11 AM when free parking remains available and temperatures stay cooler. The $25 admission fee includes access to the entire valley and botanical garden. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water, and a towel if you plan to swim. Water shoes help on the rocky pool bottom and slippery sections of the paved trail. The parking lot fills by noon, especially on weekends and during winter months when North Shore surf draws crowds. Heavy rains temporarily close the swimming pool due to bacteria concerns or strong currents, so check conditions before visiting. The paved path becomes slick when wet. Most visitors spend two to three hours exploring the valley, swimming, and photographing the waterfall from multiple viewing areas along the pool's edge.
