About This Place

Lanikai Beach stretches for half a mile of powdery white sand on Oahu's windward coast, consistently ranking among the world's best beaches. The calm, turquoise waters and gentle trade winds create perfect conditions for swimming, kayaking, and relaxing. Two small offshore islands, the Mokulua Islands, provide a stunning backdrop and popular kayak destination. This beach attracts families with young children thanks to its protected waters and soft sand bottom. Couples and photographers also flock here for the pristine scenery and famous sunrise views. The beach has no facilities, so bring water, snacks, umbrellas, and reef-safe sunscreen. Pack out all trash. Getting here requires planning. No public parking exists near the beach. Park along Kailua Road or at Kailua Beach Park, then walk 10-15 minutes through the residential Lanikai neighborhood via several public beach access paths between homes. Look for the narrow walkways marked with small signs. Visit early morning between 6-9 AM for the best experience. You'll catch the spectacular sunrise, avoid crowds, and find easier parking. Afternoons bring stronger trade winds and more people. The water stays calm year-round, but watch for occasional strong currents near the reef areas. The intense tropical sun reflects off white sand and water, making sunscreen and shade essential. High tide covers much of the beach, so check tide charts if you want maximum sand space. This hidden gem rewards the effort it takes to reach it.
